What is a "word cloud"? A word cloud is an image created from the words of a text passage. Size of each word is based on the frequency of the word in the passage. Words can be arranged into basic shapes to to increase the appeal of the resulting image.

Just as with all of our printable worksheets, we would love to hear your comments and suggestions. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions & Troubleshooting

The word cloud is very small

This usually occurs with a small word sample and you can increase the size in the "Cloud Size/Shape" menu in the blue menu > Word Size > "Enlarge"

Please Note: Our word cloud generator requires a large amount of words to provide the best results. More Words = Better Word Cloud. A paragraph that fills the "Text Passage" box (and deleting all words in the "remove Words" box) is usually the minimum amount of words that provides a 'decent' word cloud. Enough words to fill that box several times provides a much better cloud.

The highest frequency word is missing!

This is because the frequency caused that word to be "TOO BIG" to fit on the page. To recover this word into the cloud you have 2 options:

Go to "Cloud Size/Shape" and choose "Shrink" in the Word Size options (try clicking multiple times)
Another option, you can close the word cloud - returning to the form where you entered your words and go to the "Word Frequency" box manually reduce the frequency # of the highest (removed) words. Try remaking the puzzle to see if you dropped it enough to show up.

Can I make a custom shape?

Yes. This is complicated and requires you to understand how it works - but it is cool when done properly. I will outline everything that must be done below to create a custom shape:

Requires a 2 color (Black/white) 'silhoutte' image - best is a SIMPLE SHAPE! We will try to make a black/white image from a photo you upload - but it is complicated: we can turn any photo into black and white for you, but it must have a high contrast between the desired shape and background). NOT ALL PHOTOS WILL WORK PROPERLY - a picture of a black ball on a light background will likely work, whereas a photo of your house with trees is too intricate to make a decipherable word cloud from. The simpler the shape, and the higher the contrast, the better!
Generally, the more words you enter, the more detail that can be achieved in your word cloud
Reducing the colors of the word cloud to all be 1 or 2 colors make the best custom word clouds (you can see the shape better)

Can I make a PDF and store this on my computer?

Yes. After you create and edit your worksheet, click the "Save As" button in the blue menu and choose 'Save As PDF'

Can I put this worksheet on my website? Can I put this worksheet in my book? etc.
